Print Ad Specifications

Material Requirements

  • Preferred file format is high-res PDF.
  • All PDF files must be submitted as CMYK.
  • Fonts must be embedded in files.
  • All ad material will only be kept on file for one year from date of insertion.
  • Color proofs are the responsibility of advertisers. A proof of the file can be pulled at a cost of $25 per file.

Spread Ad

  • PDFs created with Quark or InDesign should use the page trim size dimensions of 8.375” x10.75” and set up the spread as two single pages side by side.
  • Bleed colors and images off top, bottom and sides by .125".
  • In the center area keep all live copy at least .125" to the left and right of the center. All other edges need to have all live copy .25” from trim edges. This gives a live area of 7.875” x 10.25”.
  • PDFs created with Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop use the bleed dimensions 17" x 11. Keep all copy .5" from all sides and .25" to left and right of center. Live area is 16.25” x 10.25".

Special Inserts

Samples of all inserts must be sent two months prior to issue date for approval to ensure it will meet production specs from the printer. If an insert or bound-in media is not provided by the ad material deadline and its design incurs additional postage or printing costs, those costs will be passed on to the client.

File Preparation

  • Magazine is printed with a 133-line screen. Images must not exceed 300% maximum density. SWOP standards apply.
  • All ad files must be supplied as CMYK, this includes all images within the PDF. No files containing RGB will be accepted.
  • All PMS colors must be converted to CMYK.
  • Advertisement dimensions must be exact size for the file to be accepted.
  • PDFs created with Quark or InDesign must be created to trim size 8.375" x 10.75" with any image area pulled outside of the trim area by .125” on every side the image will bleed. All live matter (copy) must be kept .25” from trim edge.
  • PDFs created with Illustrator or Photoshop must be created to bleed size 8.625" x 11". All live matter (copy) must be kept .50" from bleed edge. All live matter (copy) must be kept .25" from trim.
  • Picture boxes must have a fill of 0% white or black.
  • All embedded images must be TIFF or EPS—not PNG, JPEG or PICT files.
  • Image resolution should be 300 ppi (and cannot be less than 150ppi).
  • Check all trapping for correct knockout and overprinting.

Submitting files to FTP

To send digital files via FTP, collect all page layouts, fonts, graphics, and compress them into one stuffed file. Label file with issue date and advertiser name.

Short Rates & Rebates

Advertisers will be short rated if within a 12-month period from the date of the first insertion they do not use the amount of space on which billing was based. Advertisers will be rebated if within a 12-month period from the date of the first insertion they have earned a higher frequency than was originally billed.

General Policy

Advertisers and advertising agencies assume liability for all content, including text, representation, and illustration of advertisements printed, and also for any claims originating therefrom made against the publisher. The publisher reserves the right to reject any advertising or to request changes.

Any deliberate attempt to simulate the publication's format is not permitted, and the publisher reserves the right to place the word "advertisement" with copy which, in the publisher's opinion, resembles editorial matter. Publisher is not bound by conditions appearing on insertion orders or copy instructions not in accord with rate card.

Agency Commission

A 15% agency commission will be allowed on space, color, bleed, and position rates only if account is paid within 30 days of invoice receipt. Commission is not allowed on insert back-ups, trimming, production fees, or classified advertising. A charge of 1.5% per month or annual rate of 18% will be made on all accounts past due.

In the event of nonpayment by an advertising agency, advertiser will be held accountable for payment. Advertiser and advertising agency are jointly and severally liable for payment. PPA will not release any advertising agency from liability even if a sequential liability clause is included in the contract, insertion order, purchase order, etc. No cash discounts.
